I love the idea of having a doula. What a fantastic thing to do for somebody - light housework AND listening, AND nappy-changing - genuinely sounds like heaven.

Happy to hear that B is sleeping in a bit - long live sleep, say I.

Thank you for your lucid comments, which quickly cut to the heart of the matter. Some days I get the impression that there’s a permanent stand-off between those who define breastfeeding as a child’s “natural right” and those who adamantly speak only of a mother’s “informed choice”. You really have to love this latter expression, which borders on tautology – as if genuine choice was conceivable in the absence of a minimum of information from a disinterested source (cf. Aesop’s classic caveat: Distrust interested advice). I’m reminded of the impression that infant formula manufacturers give when they use these magic words: They do the informing while, on this basis, mothers are expected to do the choosing. In fact, if mothers were genuinely informed they would choose breastfeeding every time, as indeed would babies if they could because that’s what they are naturally prepared to receive when they enter this world.

My Nan was a writer and was published in several books....she was born in Birmingham and there are many books of that era that she contributed to. She even wrote her life story for us grandchildren (typed on a manual typewriter) that we all have a copy of....she did BBC radio interviews for the year 2000....and she wrote childrens story books for her great-grandchildren when she was well into her 80's.....so we have so much of her still with us even though she is no longer with us in life. I have hundreds of letters that she wrote to me saved in a special memory box...So whatever you write Karen has amazing value and will be treasured. x

I'm not sure what you should do either but you should do something. Capture them, frame them, convert them to something digital...

Then you can look back on them in years to come.

Oh and here's the link again, in case I did it wrong:http://www.1dental.com/moms-guide/. It really helped us to avoid our son's tooth infection getting out of control- we had no idea that bump on his gums meant an infection. And it wouldn't have gone away on it's own, we discovered. So it's something I feel strongly about passing along to other parents who might need it. (And you can delete this if the original post included the correct link. Thanks!!)

I agree with you. I read some books when I had my first child, but there are SO many books and they say vastly different things. For us, we just found a good routine (our kids love a predictable routine and are usually great sleepers), give them a balanced diet (as much as we can with a veggie-hater) teach them safety, and parent in a way that will result in the values we want to instill in these kids as we guide them through childhood and toward maturity. What works with one kid does not always work with another. We do seek out help when we hit bumps in the road. With behavior, usually we ask advice from people who have successfully navigated through similar situations. With things like my daredevil toddler's major tooth injury we found this <a href="http://www.1dental.com/moms-guide/

">Mom’s Guide to be helpful, we sought a second dentist's opinion and I got even more input via email from a dentist dad I was fortunate enough to get connected with. Thanks for this post. You have such a good point. And it was a good reminder to me (especially today with a very willful 3 year old) to approach this with patience. You are right, this will pass. Thanks!! :)

Whoa. That's quite some record. I'm glad you've come to rest, as it were. The houses and their hidden spaces sound intriguing, to me, but then I've lived in one place for more than 20 years.

I feel very aggrieved. One of their justifications was that they run antenatal classes, focusing mainly on baby massage, at another CC. Compare evidence for health and social benefits of baby massage, with evidence of same for breastfeeding. meh.

Apparently they're spending all their money buying ludicrous things on their credit cards, according to the Telegraph today.
