Less tic-ing, more talking

Bernard’s body seems to have settled down, with occasional exceptions which do seem to be related to tiredness. We’ve had three weeks in a more regular routine now that he’s in preschool every weekday. He has discovered the wonder of flow charts.

I say more talking, but I mean more reading and writing – it just doesn’t sound as good. A little while ago we unearthed a packet of Letterland flashcards, inherited in a bag full of toys from someone somewhere [i.e. not something I would buy]. These proved reliably entertaining for quite some time, with the added bonus that the boy learned all his letters, upper and lower case. I don’t know if he does much with letters in preschool, but in the last few weeks he has suddenly exploded into reading and writing.

I secretly chuckle when we’re at Alice’s house and Bernard is trouncing Stan on the Speak&Spell.

  1. The whole reading thing does seem to be on the child’s own timetable. We’ve found with Tom that, just before Christmas, he discovered a love of books and kept telling us “I want to learn to read”. Which is (a) wonderful and (b) giving us a bit of pressure when a book is shoved under our nose when we are in the bath/cooking tea/on the loo. Tom’s nursery is good on letters, words and reading. The have a letter of the week and the kids are encouraged to bring something to nursery that begins with that letter. He’s also encouraged to write the letter. Joining the letters into words is taking a little longer, largely because he is obsessed with and easily distracted by the letter T (“T for Tom!!”), but we are getting there. But it must be said that the whole process has become dramatically easier since he developed the enthusiasm – cajoling didn’t really get us far.

  2. Quite right too. I don’t think we cajoled, just followed Bernard’s lead. But perhaps he enjoys reading and writing because we can usually be counted on to do it with him; whereas pushing toy cars around on the floor isn’t really my bag.
