This is a companion piece to a similarly-themed article on Pete’s site which, all things being equal, should be published at roughly the same time.
This stunt is certainly introducing me to things I would not otherwise have listened to, and as such is fulfilling its original remit. The Sly Stone playlist runs the gamut from shite to awesome, just as all the others have (with the possible exceptions of The Replacements, who somehow didn’t make it all the way to awesome).
Dance to the music. So when this started up, I was instantly transported back to aerobics classes in the 1980s. Not a place I really wanted to be.
M’Lady utterly undiscernible from the previous track.
I want to take you higher has some enjoyable screechy vocals and trumpetty bits, which I quite liked. It appears at this point to be improving.
Everyday People On the one hand, this seems all deep and meaningful, and definitely has a better tune. On the other hand if you actually listen to the lyrics, it’s nonsense. How can something so shallow be so deep?
Stand Less impressive than the last one.
Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again) As stupid as its title promises it’s going to be.
Family Affair Compelling and earwormy, in a good way. Finally it lifts this playlist from the utterly rubbish and gives me something I do want to listen to.
Que Sera Sera Lenny Kravitz does gospel.
If you want me to stay is MILES above every other track on this playlist. I know for a fact that it made Pete want to play his bass, because he spontaneously did. I can’t get this song out of my head, and I don’t want to. Pocket. Heh.
Loose Booty And we’re back in the pile of shite.
Seems I have been quite scathing about this playlist, but in fact it does make good working music. I find myself dancing quietly in my seat and feeling happy during the day. This in itself must surely be a good thing.
