The plastics recycling thing says that you should remove lids from milk bottles. As far as I can see (from a Sainsbury’s bottle in my fridge) the lids and bottles are both marked as type 2 plastic (HDPE) so should both be recyclable in bottle-only recycling facilities. So the only reason to separate them would be to facilitate crushing.
Our local council asks that bottles are not crushed prior to recycling as crushed bottles are harder to sort mechanically. Hand sorting is more expensive and the economics don’t stack up for their limited budget.
