Has your midwife discussed a possible date for inducing the birth if Bernard can’t be bothered to come out into the big wide world on his own? I understand that the NHS has a policy of inducing all births 14 days after the due date, regardless, which is why the UK has an average birth date before the due date – whereas if they let nature take its course and waited another day or two, we’d have an average birth date that matched the due date (if that makes sense).

Otherwise, I suggest some light exercise, spicy food and (whisper it) a bit of nookie. These things, um, … hmm. Perhaps I shouldn’t talk about that here!

14 days sounds like a more generous estimate than I had heard; I thought they routinely induced at term+10. As you have probably guessed, induction is one of the many interventions that I’m not keen on; we will have to wait and see. Obviously this depends on the comfort and continued well-being of me and Bernard, but having said that nothing has happened yet, there has been an occasional quite painful twinge – say three in 24 hours.

This week, we are mostly eating pineapples.
